Dr. Peter Vastardis of Garden City Dental Associates carefully screens his patients for oral cancer–a too-common and potentially deadly cancer which targets the lips, tongue, roof of the mouth and  back of the throat. Diagnosed early, oral cancer is treatable and curable. The team at Garden City Dental Associates wants you to know the facts about oral cancer and to receive regular screenings. They can save your life.

Why Oral Cancer Screenings are Important

  1. Oral cancer is indiscriminate.Anyone can get it, no matter the age, gender or socioeconomic status. However, some people seem more prone to oral cancer, including middle-aged men. However, the number of women with oral cancer has increased dramatically over the past decade. Men with oral cancer used to outnumber women six to one. Right now, the statistic stands at two men to one woman.
  1. Oral cancer has many risk factors. They include smoking, chewing tobacco, alcohol abuse and excessive sun exposure. Individuals who have contacted the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) have additional risk. HPV is linked to cervical cancer. Finally, the Oral Cancer Foundation says that about seven percent of diagnosed cases have none of these risk factors. In other words, oral cancer simply shows up.
  1. Five-year survival rate is around 45 percent.Unfortunately, numerous oral cancers are diagnosed too late. If found early, survival rates improve to 80 to 90 percent. That’s why Garden City dentist, Dr. Peter Vastardis, urges semi-annual oral cancer screenings. In his practice, the doctor uses the VELscope visualization tool as well as simple inspection of the mouth. The VELscope examination is fast, painless and illuminates areas of concern in the mouth much better than simple visual examination.
  1. Research shows that nutrition factors into oral cancer.A nutritious diet high in fruits and vegetables reduces the risk, and a diet low in vegetables and fruits appears to increase the risk of developing oral cancer.
  1. Watch out for mouth sores and spots that don’t heal. If you detect lumps, swellings, red or white patches or sores that do not heal in your mouth within two weeks, see your primary care physician or Dr. Vastardis as soon as possible. Hoarseness, a persistent sore throat or earache on one side, pain or trouble swallowing may indicate cancer as well. Get to the doctor or Garden City Dental Associates right away.

Oral Cancer is a Serious Concern

So, be sure you and yours get screened. If you receive semi-annual screenings with Dr. Peter Vastardis, you can rest assured your oral health is being well-monitored and protected. For four consecutive years, Dr. Vastardis has been chosen as a Top Dentist by the Consumer Research Council.
