Pediatric Dental Problems Associated With Bottled, "Designer",
Water
Denis Weintraub, DDS, co-director, Hospital Dentistry, Ambulatory Care
Center Dental Clinic at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA,
has found that well-meaning parents who give their infants "designer"
bottled waters to drink may unknowingly cause their young children to
have dental problems. Although these parents may be health conscious
in protecting their children from chemically treated tap water, instead
use bottled waters which contain no fluoride, which is essential in preventing
tooth decay.
For parents, the best way to ensure healthy teeth for their children
is eating healthy foods, frequently visiting their dentists for checkups
and proper cleaning of the child's teeth by the parents with a soft washcloth,
tissue or cotton swab. If fluoride supplementation is needed, the pediatrician
or pediatric dentist will form an evaluation with the parents on dosage
amounts.
