Pediatric Vitamins
Like adults, children require vitamins in their daily diet. Vitamins
by definition, are compounds necessary in trace amounts, for the normal
functioning of the body. Like adults, children require vitamins to aid
in the growth and development of bones, connective tissue, wound healing,
control of bleeding and even to protect the teeth from becoming loose.
Most vitamins cannot be produced in sufficient amounts by the body, and
as a result, the need for supplements are taken from our surroundings. As for children, eating healthy foods, is probably the best source of
vitamins. By eating fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, etc. , a
child can obtain the necessary vitamins. The greatest problem with this
is that children tend to avoid these "healthy" foods. A multivitamin
supplement is probably a good idea. In infants, most formulas already
have adequate levels of vitamin A, C, and D. In breast milk, most nutrients
will be passed on to the infant.
It is important to note that over-prescribing vitamins is not good for
anyone and may in fact be unhealthy to the child or adult. Many pediatric
formulations exist, such as Poly-Vi-Flor, and one should check with their
pediatric physician or pediatric dentist to evaluate what dosage and daily
requirements the child needs.
