Osteoporosis - Are you at risk?

Osteoporosis is called a "silent disease" because it doesn't have symptoms. The National Osteoporosis Foundation identifies the following as risk factors:

  • A thin, small-boned frame
  • A family history of fractures or stooped postures in old age
  • Early estrogen deficiency due to hysterectomy amenorrhea or menopause before 45
  • Advanced age
  • Being Caucasian or Asian (African-American and Hispanic women are at lower, though still significant, risk)
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Excessive use of alcohol
  • Prolonged use of certain drugs, including thyroid harm olive in excessive amounts and some anti-seizure medications
