Osteoporosis - Are you at risk?
Osteoporosis is called a "silent disease" because it doesn't
have symptoms. The National Osteoporosis Foundation identifies the following
as risk factors:
- A thin, small-boned frame
- A family history of fractures or stooped postures in old age
- Early estrogen deficiency due to hysterectomy amenorrhea or menopause
before 45
- Advanced age
- Being Caucasian or Asian (African-American and Hispanic women are
at lower, though still significant, risk)
- Smoking cigarettes
- Excessive use of alcohol
- Prolonged use of certain drugs, including thyroid harm olive in excessive
amounts and some anti-seizure medications
